Caves with Unknown Locations
A few caves have been recorded in the literature for which locations are not known and so they cannot be shown on the maps here. The details which are known are listed below:
Co. Clare
Jacko’s Hole
Td: unknown; Length: 10 m?; Altitude: unknown; ITM: unknown
A 3 m diameter tunnel on the seaward side of Aillwee Mountain is said to choke completely within a short distance. Despite repeated attempts, this cave has not been relocated since its discovery was first reported in the 1970s.
Co. Galway
The following five caves were explored and described in 1987 (Wright, C., Wright, E. and Webster, W. 1987. New Caving Area in Galway. Newsletter of the Speleological Union of Ireland. 9. 16-17). However, in deference to the landowner they did not publish location details and consequently the whereabouts of these caves remains a mystery.
Poll-a-aChuirca
A deep shakehole near School House sink contains a lake.
Poll an Fuisce
A shakehole in a forest leads into a roomy passage, 3 m by 4 m wide. A scramble over boulders leads to a lake that deepens quickly and requires swimming. After a short distance this passage sumps. A second low passage, 1 m by 0.8 m wide, leads from the entrance to larger passage and a second lake. Traversing across this lake leads to a junction where three passages with minimal airspace were seen to continue. These were not followed by the original explorers.
Runaway Cave
A large shakehole in the middle of a forest leads to a roomy phreatic passage, 3 m by 2m wide. After crossing a small lake, breakdown was encountered. A squeeze between boulders leads to a small water-filled passage which closed down to only 6 cm of air space. This was seen to continue but was not followed.
School House Sink
A small stream sinks at the contact between granite and carboniferous limestone. In high water conditions this soon sumps. Local information states that the stream resurges in a lake some 2 km away and 30 m lower down.
Unamed Cave
A large phreatic entrance chamber on the “side of forest hill” led to a roomy passage which quickly sumped.
Co. Mayo
Nymphsfield Joint Cave
Td: Nymphsfield; Length: 16 m; ITM: unknown
A cave is reported to be a short distance to the north of Cong and comprised of 16 m of joint controlled passage with water flowing from the north. No other details are known.
